On March 8, 2017, The Marsh brings together Ron Jones and Marsh artist in residence, Marc Montserrat-Drukker, for a Marsh Talk, The Wave, A Week To Fascism, moderated by Barbara Lane.
In 1967, Ron Jones a young, charismatic Palo Alto high school teacher was teaching a history class on the Holocaust. The class could not believe how the holocaust had happened. So Ron, devised an experiment. He called it The Third Wave. In less than a week, he developed a fascist regime and environment at Cubberley High.
After the experiment, Ron wrote a short story about the experiment that was published in the Whole Earth Review (CoEvolution Quarterly). In current terms, it has since gone “viral.” A TV movie by Norman Lear, a novel, a documentary, a German movie and playwrights around the world have produced their own theatrical version of this story. Including Marsh Youth Theater developing its own musical in 2009.
Over five years, Marc Montserrat-Drukker developed his own version La Ola (The Wave). Premiering in Barcelona in 2013, La Ola was selected by theater critics as one of Spain’s top 10 theater productions for the year. He calls it his life’s work.
Moderated by Barbara Lane, we are thrilled to have Marc and Ron on The Marsh stage to discuss this particularly timely story.
