INFO / CREDITS

L'ONADA (THE WAVE) IS A NEW PLAY, CREATED BY STAGE DIRECTOR MARC MONTSERRAT DRUKKER AND PLAYWRIGHT IGNACIO GARCÍA MAY, WHICH IS BASED ON AN ACTUAL EXPERIMENT CONDUCTED BY SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHER RON JONES IN 1967. UNLIKE OTHER PREVIOUS PROJECTS INSPIRED BY THE EXPERIMENT IN QUESTION, MARC AND IGNACIO'S STAGE VERSION DOES NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THE CENTRAL STORY TO CONSTRUCT A MORE OR LESS CONVENTIONAL THRILLER, BUT RATHER STICKS TO THE FACTS AS FAITHFULLY AS POSSIBLE, IN KEEPING WITH HOW THEY WERE ACTUALLY DESCRIBED BY JONES HIMSELF IN VARIOUS ARTICLES AND INTERVIEWS AND LATER COMPILED BY SEVERAL OF THE STUDENTS WHO HAD PARTICIPATED IN THE EXPERIMENT. IT IS NOT, THEREFORE, AN ADAPTATION OF SUCH FILMS OR INDEED ANY OTHER FILM, BUT RATHER AN ORIGINAL TEXT BASED ON EXHAUSTIVE RESEARCH. IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS POSSIBLE, IT WAS NECESSARY TO STUDY AND REFLECT UPON THE MATERIAL IN DEPTH AND, IN THE CASE OF THE PLAY’S DIRECTOR, MARC MONTSERRAT DRUKKER, SUCH AN UNDERTAKING INVOLVED A PERIOD OF SEVERAL YEARS. IT IS IN SUCH A CONTEXT, THEREFORE, THAT THE DIRECTOR AND THE PLAYWRIGHT WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS THEIR GRATITUDE TO TWO OF THE ORIGINAL PARTICIPANTS IN THE EXPERIMENT, PHILIP NEEL AND MARK HANCOCK, FOR THEIR INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS, AND ALSO TO RON JONES HIMSELF, WITH ALL OF WHOM THEY WERE IN DIRECT CONTACT WHEN CONSTRUCTING THE PLAY. CLEARLY, AND FOR DRAMATURGICAL REASONS, IT WAS NECESSARY TO CHANGE CERTAIN DETAILS (NAMES AND SITUATIONS) AND TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT. THE FACT THAT THE PLAY, WHICH IS PREDOMINANTLY ABOUT FREEDOM, WAS PREMIERED AT A THEATRE WITH THE WORD “FREE” FORMING HALF OF ITS NAME (BARCELONA’S TEATRE LLIURE – FREE THEATRE) IS A TRULY HAPPY COINCIDENCE.

SYNOPSIS

CALIFORNIA IN THE 1960S. THE VIETNAM WAR, ROCK MUSIC AND DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING’S MARCHES AGAINST RACISM ARE THE MAIN SUBJECTS OF EVERYDAY CONVERSATION. RON JONES, A YOUNG AND CHARISMATIC HIGH-SCHOOL TEACHER, DECIDES TO TEACH HIS HISTORY STUDENTS HOW IT WAS POSSIBLE FOR A SOCIETY, LIKE GERMANY IN THE 1930S AND 1940S, TO GIVE WAY TO NAZISM AND CONCENTRATION CAMPS. IN ORDER TO DO THIS, HE CONDUCTED AN EXPERIMENT: OVER THE COURSE OF SEVERAL WEEKS, HIS PUPILS WERE TO FOLLOW A SET OF STRICT RULES WHICH WOULD ALLOW THEM TO EXPERIENCE, AT FIRST HAND AND FROM WITHIN, JUST HOW EASY IT WAS TO BECOME PART OF A TOTALITARIAN APPARATUS. THE STUDENTS AGREED, AT FIRST RELUCTANTLY, BUT THEN WITH GROWING ENTHUSIASM, UNTIL THE EXPERIMENT THREATENED TO GET OUT OF JONES' HAND…

IN THIS ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATING, HARD-HITTING, SHOCKING AND MAGNIFICENT PRODUCTION RECENTLY STAGED AT THE TEATRE LLIURE IN GRÀCIA (BARCELONA), L’ONADA (THE WAVE), SHOWS JUST HOW EASY IT IS TO CONVERT YOUNG STUDENTS INTO AUTHENTIC FASCISTS. THERE ARE A FEW BOOKS AND A FILM ON THE SUBJECT, BUT NOTHING AS CREDIBLE AND PROFOUND AS THIS PIECE DIRECTED BY  MARC MONTSERRAT DRUKKER FOLLOWING YEARS OF RESEARCH INTO THE SUBJECT (…) THE EXPERIENCE ENVELOPS AND ASTOUNDS THE AUDIENCE (…) AND THE SHOW IS BOTH ASTONISHING AND FASCINATING.

EL PAÍS / MARCOS ORDÓÑEZ

THE DIRECTOR, MARC MONTSERRAT DRUKKER, THE SOUL OF THE PROJECT, DEMONSTRATES HIS COMMAND OF MOVEMENT AND BLOCKING, AND A FINELY TUNED SENSE OF DRAMATIC RHYTHM, EFFECTIVELY OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGE OF HOW TO MAKE THESE EXTREMELY YOUNG STUDENTS/ACTORS CREDIBLE. THE WHOLE CAST IS PRECISE AND SURE-FOOTED. CONGRATULATIONS! THE ENDING IS BRILLIANT. (…) L’ONADA (THE WAVE) IS A MUST-SEE FOR YOUNGER AUDIENCES AND A SHOW RECOMMENDED FOR ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE.

TIME OUT BARCELONA / SANTI FONDEVILA

WITH L’ONADA (THE WAVE), A RIGOROUS EXAMPLE OF DOCUMENTARY THEATRE HAS COME TO GRÀCIA’S LLIURE THEATRE (BARCELONA) (…) THE STUDENTS DEPICTED IN THE SHOW BECOME A COHESIVE ENSEMBLE, WHICH DIRECTOR MARC MONTSERRAT HAS IMBUED WITH A PRECISE SENSE OF DRAMATIC DEVELOPMENT.

LA VANGUARDIA / JOAN-ANTON BENACH

L’ONADA (THE WAVE) HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY BROUGHT TO THE STAGE THROUGH THE EXHAUSTIVE WORK OF DIRECTOR MARC MONTSERRAT DRUKKER, WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE DRAMATIST IGNACIO GARCÍA MAY. NO LESS ENTHUSIASTIC AND SINCERE IS THE WORK OF THE CAST, LED BY A STRONG AND COMMITTED EDUARD FARELO (AS RON JONES) ALONGSIDE A CONVINCING SQUAD OF UP-AND-COMING YOUNG ACTORS (…) IN SHORT, A MUST-SEE SHOW.

EL PERIÓDICO / JOSÉ CARLOS SORRIBES

WHAT BETTER CRITICAL RESPONSE TO L’ONADA (THE WAVE) THAN THE REACTION OF TWO OF THE CREATORS OF THE ORIGINAL EXPERIMENT AFTER THE FIRST NIGHT. RON JONES AND MARK HANCOCK, ACCOMPANIED BY THEIR WIVES, WERE PRESENT AT THE PREMIERE AND, VISIBLY MOVED, GAVE THE SHOW A LONG STANDING OVATION.

EL PAÍS / BEGOÑA BARRENA

AN UNSETTLING EXERCISE IN DOCUMENTARY THEATRE. (…) DON’T MISS IT!

EL PUNT AVUI / JORDI BORDES

THE RESULT IS A WONDERFUL SHOW YOU CAN SEE AT THE TEATRE LLIURE IN GRÀCIA (BARCELONA), CAPTIVATING, LIKE FEW OTHERS, IT LEAVES YOU THINKING ABOUT WHAT YOU’VE SEEN FOR DAYS AFTERWARDS. THE SUCCESS OF L’ONADA (THE WAVE) IS THAT IT GOES BEYOND THE ATTRACTIVE CINEMATOGRAPHY AND THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE EXPERIMENT. AND THAT’S NOT ALL, IT’S ALSO A PLAY THAT MOVES LIKE CLOCKWORK (…) IT’S ONE OF THE BEST PLAYS OF THE SEASON: ENTERTAINING, FASCINATING, INTRIGUING AND IT TEACHES YOU AND MAKES YOU THINK INTO THE BARGAIN. LONG MAY IT RUN!
